COMPLIANCE ETC: THINGS YOU MAY HAVE MISSED – APRIL 11

With a certain lack or irony, the Global Compliance Forum has opened its latest conference in Panama, as the Panama Papers trials gets underway. Being held for the second consecutive year in Panama, it has the slogan “World Compliance Forum Transparent Panama”. It is organised by the National Commission against Money Laundering, Financing of Terrorism and Financing of the Proliferation of Weapons of Mass Destruction (CNBC), the Foundation for the Study of Money Laundering (Felade) and the United Nations University for Peace (UPEACE).

Meanwhile, us ordinary folk are coping with the fact that the rainy season has definitely arrived (albeit in afternoons only, which is the usual pattern), with heavy downpours – particularly this afternoon. One of our cats, despite being born and living here for 2 years, still hides under the bed, obviously frightened by the tremendous noise from the rain on the roof.

On a personal level, having problems booking flights for later this year. Not the flights themselves, but rather the 25% discount available to retirees in Panama. As if to make it deliberately difficult, you must reserve your flight, and then make a separate applications (one for each eligible passenger) together with an uploaded scan of your cedula (ID card). The reservation is saved for 24 hours to allow the processing but, needless to say, the 24 hours has now passed without being able to pay for the discounted tickets (you need the code from the airline to received the discount when paying). While the discount seems generous, my understanding is that it costs the airline nothing, as they receive a tax offset for all such discounts.
