The long-awaited “Panama Papers” trial has opened today, with 27 defendants, including the founders of the Mossack Fonseca law firm at the heart of the scandal. 8 years on, and the notoriously slow Panamanian legal system is about to take account of the case. Each defendant faces up to 12 years in prison. There are another 4 defendants who are currently fugitives. The newspaper La Prensa has begun a day-by-day, minute-by-minute reporting of the hearing.
After 13 weeks of 2024, over 4,000 cases of dengue have been reported in Panama; with 20 cases described as serious and 8 deaths. Last year there were nearly 21,000 cases, 41 serious and 18 fatalities.
