COMPLIANCE ETC: THINGS YOU MAY HAVE MISSED – APRIL 1

Back to sort of normal, as Easter Monday is not a holiday here. Spent a good part of the morning queuing at the local lottery office, claiming a (modest) lottery win – left with thought that only a substantial prize really justifies the inconvenience.

Mind you a worse day for the father of a friend of my wife, as the Supreme Court of Justice confirmed the 12-year prison sentence for the former mayor of Panama 2009-2014, convicted of embezzlement in August. Again to illustrate the slow pace of Panamanian justice, the investigation was opened in 2013. And he already had a 4-year sentence for corruption…

In other news, we are told that 30 tons of drugs were seized in january to March, in 122 operations, with 104 Panamanians arrested, together with 32 foreigners – said to be mostly Colombian. In 2023, Panama seized 119 tons of drugs, down from a record 138 tons in 2022.
