So far this year, it seems that 82,000 migrants have crossed the Darién, the majority being Venezuelans (having already lost 25% of its population, Venezuela will be empty soon if this carries on!). Ecuadorians were the second-largest group, after unrest there.
However, the migrants come from everywhere, and RFA had an article today about a member of the Hui Muslim minority from the northern city of Tangshan in China. He and his family were among 24,000 Chinese nationals said to have made the grueling trip through Central America to the Mexican-US border. for a boat ride boat ride in Colombia and the trek through the Darién jungle, adults were charged $1,100 each, the eldest child $600, and the youngest $500, totaling $3,300 for the family.

Meanwhile, the Government has said that the cost to it of closing the copper mine at the centre of last year’s protests would be around $800 million.
However, one bit of good news. It was announced on International Women’s Day that Panama has the fewest femicides in Latin America, with 15 last year.
