In other news, a newly-elected deputy has proposed a new amnesty law for Assembly members – although this would be contrary to the Constitution, which provides that the Assembly can only decree, by law, amnesty for political crimes. Apparently the previous Martinelli administration applied an amnesty law to quash convictions of police officers who had killed some fishermen – but that amnesty was ruled unconstitutional, and the defendants subsequently convicted some 15 years later. It might be pertinent to mention that not only has ex-President Martinelli has recently been concicted of money laundering, but that he, his sons, and the brother of the deputy now proposing a new amnesty law, all face ongoing criminal cases for alleged, and non-political crimes.
