COMPLIANCE ETC: THINGS YOU MAY HAVE MISSED – JUNE 15

Trying to recover from a too-indulgent Italian buffet lunch at one of the hotles occupying a skyscraper on the seafront – have to recover because have a big family breakfast at a famous Chinese restaurant for Fathers’ Day – not for my benefit, I hasten to add. So much of life in Panama appears linked to food, and drink. Every other shop in Panama seems to be a food shop, cafe, or restaurant; with mobile food vendors and food stands as well. No wonder that the outgoing government spoke of an obesity epidemic…

In other news, Panama has brought into service a new drugs incinerator. Previously illegal drugs were burned in the open at a landfill site, or sent to the US (a large consignment was despatched only this week). The $1.5 million facility should help with the approximately 12 to 13 tons of drugs seized per month, an amount that exceeds the capacities of improvised warehouses in different parts of the country. In the last 5 years, the authorities have seized 589.6 tons of drugs; and Panama is said to be the only country in the region that has an incinerator for illicit substances.
