This started out as a short brief but, although still only providing a (relatively) short summary, it got a bit out of hand…so I put a short summary at the start so one does not have to read it all.
The idea was to give an idea of the background to one of the reasons that the US eventually handed over the Canal and Canal Zone back to Panama.
