A bit of a tangent, but with a Panama connection – both because the US worried over it as it could be seen as one of those islands screening the approach to the Canal (there was some resentment against the US in Martinique at the time, due to rumours that it had tried to buy the island from France, as it had bought the Virgin Islands from Denmark), and that the Striking Force formed and trained in Panama was earmarked for invasion, should that be necessary.
In any case, a fascinating story, with far more detail than I have managed – about the refugees to and from the island, the resistance and the smuggling, and how the Vichy regime behaved.
