The big money laundering trial, delayed and due to begin this week, has been again delayed, and is now due to start on 26 June. There are 32 defendants, including 2 former Presidents. The “Car Wash” case involves the now-defunct law firm Mossack Fonseca, which was the epicenter of the Panama Papers scandal.

Costa Rica has warned that it will not be able to manage more migrants, after more than 127,000 have passed through Panama so far in 2023. The Costa Rican foreign minister has warned that his country can only process a limited number of people who are on their way north. He says his country could process 250 to 400 migrants a day from south to north, but not, as happened last September and October, 4,000 a day.

UK COURT SENTENCED SENIOR NIGERIAN SENATOR, HIS WIFE AND A DOCTOR TO OVER 9 YEARS PRISON FOR ILLEGAL ORGAN HARVESTING

On 7 May, Jurist reported that Senator Ike Ekweremadu, his wife, Beatrice Nwanneka Ekeweremadu, and Doctor Obinna Obeta were also sentenced to 4 and 10 years, respectively, for their role in the plot.  The victim told detectives the trio had arranged to remove his kidney and donate it to the Ekweremadus’ daughter.  The prosecution is the first of its kind under the Modern Slavery Act 2015.
