COMPLIANCE ETC: THINGS YOU MAY HAVE MISSED – APRIL 15

The UN Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) and the International Organization for Migration (IOM) have reported that over 100,000 refugees and migrants have traversed the Darien jungle within the initial 3 months of this year. unsurprisingly perhaps, approximately one-third of the group were said to have been subjected to mistreatment or abuse, particularly during the crossing of the Darién jungle.

In health news, the health ministery has reported 1,152 cases of dengue (6 serious, but no fatalities) and 412 of leishmaniasis (a skin disease spread by sandflies) at present in Panama. For hantavirus, caused by rodent droppings, there are 9 cases of hantavirus cardiopulmonary syndrome (with 1 death registered) and 3 cases of hantavirus fever. There are also 3,125 cumulative cases of malaria to date, with roughly half of the cases in one province, Guna Yala. there are also 7 cases of chikungunya (another mosquito-spred virus which, like dengue, can cause long-term joint pain – dengue is also known as “break bone fever”), and no cases of zika virus.
