COMPLIANCE ETC: THINGS YOU MAY HAVE MISSED – APRIL 11

A major export from Panama is the pineapple, and “Pineapple Week” takes place next week, with such fascinating topics discussed as the use of bioregular and biostimulants in pineapple cultivation…I don’t think we will be going.

On a more serious note, from June 2017 to June last year, the Police Directorate of Professional Responsibility conducted 162 investigations involving 214 uniformed officers for drug possession or links to organised crime. Those involved included a Captain with 14 years service, who was one of 25 people arrested in 2021 as part of a gang transporting drugs from Colombia, into Costa Rica for eventual shipment to Europe.

More trouble at that landfill site hit by fires in recent weeks, as the Government declared a “state of environmental emergency” in the face of environmental and health risks, and blaiming the previous management of the site. It seems that declaring the state of emergency allows for the acquisition of the necessary goods and services under a 2006 Law.

Meanwhile, while out today I couldn’t help noticing that the Cinta Costera seafront gardens and paths are not only looking much tidier than before, but that there seemed to be a large number of workmen collecting litter, sweeping up leaves etc. Could this have anything to to with the cycle racing taking place there later this week?
