COMPLIANCE ETC: THINGS YOU MAY HAVE MISSED – MARCH 14

The latest Covid-19 statistics, for week ending 11 March, seem to show the continuing after-effects of the Carnivale season. The number of new cases is up again, with 506 new cases reported (the figure was 458 the previous week, and that was nearly twice the number of the week before that). However, just 1 new fatality was reported and there were no patients in any ICU, although there were 42 other hospital patients with a positive Covid test. The number of active cases is up 59 to 657, and test results figure is up again – to 3.4%, having been 2.8% the week before.

Meanwhile, the increase in the number of cases of malaria is said to be a result of a relaxation of control programmes during the pandemic. There were more than twice as many malaria cases last year as compared to 2021, with 7,112 cases reported, or 3,469 additional cases.

EU: IMPORT, EXPORT AND TRANSIT MEASURES FOR FIREARMS

On 14 March, the EU Parliament Research Service published this briefing which explains changes proposed to controls.  A proposed EU Regulation would pursue 3 main objectives: a) neutralising the risks of trafficking at import and export; b) ensuring traceability in the firearms trade, based on systematic written information; and c) promoting efficient implementation of controls. It would replace the current Regulation and extend the material scope to exports, provide for consistent interpretation of rules across Member States, and allows for the flow of data at EU level.
