In the news today ist is reported that archaeologist Richard Cooke, considered the father of archaeology in Panama, has died at 75. Born in England an holder of an MBE, he obtained a degree in archaeology and modern languages at the University of Bristol and in 1969 came to Panama to work on what resulted in his PhD from the University of London in 1972. Overshadowed in many ways by the ancient history of its Latin American neighbours, Panama has nevertheless a rich history from long before the Spanish arrived.
