I didn’t know that there was a National Movement of Recyclers of Panama (El Movimiento Nacional de Recicladores de Panamá or MNRP), but it has expressed its concerns regarding the recent fire in the Cerro Patacón landfill site. It has stressed that it is not grassroots recyclers who caused the fires, and more than 350 waste pickers and their families are being severely affected by this incident.
Meanwhile, the Carnivale starts tomorrow, which incorporates a public holiday and several days of road closures and revelry until next Wednesday. The whole of the coastal promenade and gardens that line the seafront, together with the 6-line dual-carriageway highway are fully vlosed from midday today, and will be full of people, music and other noise, stalls and water tankers spraying the crowds (I’m not sure why…).
In other news, on the eve of the celebrations, the Ministry of Health (Minsa) reported 10 new cases affected of monkeypox bringing the accumulated total to 139.
