The last week of 2022 saw 7 new fatalities of people with Covid-19 (compared to 13 the week before), with 2,066 new cases (2,817 the previous week). Numbers in hospital show a substantial drop, with 3 in ICU (down from 5) and 104 in other wards (down from 120). The positivity rate continues to fall too, being 10.5% (having been 12% the week before).
On a much lesser scale, Panama now has 82 cases of monkeypox, with currently 13 actives, including 2 women.
On another front, the Statista website says that 144,500 Venezuelans moved to Panama from Venezuela during 2015-22, out of around 7 million who left that country.
Finally, the newspapers here report that, despite all his worries (and those of his 2 sons, due to return home now that they have agreed the substantial bail, so that they don’t go straight to jail upon arrival), former President Martinelli is still the leading opposition figure ahead of the 2024 election.
