On 5 July, OCCRP reported that Mihajlo Perenčević, a wealthy Croatian businessman with ties to the Russian government, has been added to UK sanctions lists. Perenčević is the president of the Russian pipeline construction company Velesstroy. He was the subject of an investigation by OCCRP in 2020, which found he was linked to the so-called “Troika Laundromat”, and was described as having ties to Russian President Vladimir Putin. The investigation claimed that his family and close allies obtained millions of dollars from Russia through fraudulent real estate transactions. In 2021, OCCRP alleged that his family surreptitiously gained control of Croatian real estate developer Jadranka in 2014, then used an opaque trust to route questionable payments from Velesstroy to Jadranka.
