PANAMA – A FLAG OF CONVENIENCE FOR ILLEGAL FISHING

On 13 June, Bloomberg Línea published the results of research into illegal, unreported and unlawful (IUU) fishing activities involving vessels flying the Panama flag.  It notes that since December 2019 Panama has been subject to a “yellow card” warning from the EU over the matter, with the threat of a “red card” that would ban seafood exports to the EU.  It gives examples of foreign-owned vessels under the Panama flag being involved in IUU fishing, particularly Chinese ones.
