KAZAKHSTAN’S LIGHT RAIL CORRUPTION CASE DRAGS ON

On 16 October, The Diplomat reported that light rail system for the capital might never be built, and the corrupt officials that stole public funds might never be convicted.  It was 2011 when a new Light Rail Transit (LRT) system was launched that would connect the main hotspots of the capital and decongest the traffic.  The main figure in the case is Kanat Sultanbekov, who served as vice-mayor of the capital in 2009-2014.  Another major actor in the scheme, according to the prosecutor, could have been Talgat Arden, then-CEO of Astana LRT, the company set up in 2011 to carry out the construction of the project.
