On 19 July, OFAC announced a set of settlements –

·        a $415,695 settlement with Alfa Laval Middle East Ltd, a company located in Dubai that sells fluid handling and other equipment for the energy industry and other sectors.  The settlement relates to the 2015-16 supply of storage tank cleaning units from the US to Iran;

·        a $16,875 settlement with Alfa Laval In, a US company, on behalf of its former subsidiary (and now an operating unit) Alfa Laval Tank Inc.  The latter was the US supplier involved in the above transaction.

On 14 July, Lloyds List reported that, until last year, Greek shipowners accounted for 80% of crude lifted from Venezuela, undeterred by US sanctions.  Then, 6 vessel-owning companies connected with 4 prominent owners were briefly blacklisted for breaching US sanctions, forcing all Greek-owned vessels involved in these trades to rethink and recalibrate business plans.  It claims that Cyprus maritime and business sector is being used by shipowners in the EU to register and flag tankers involved in Venezuelan oil trades with tacit acceptance from the Cypriot shipping ministry.
