On 31 December, a news release from the US National Oceanic & Atmospheric Administration advised that it had entered into an MoU with the US Agency for International Development (USAID) to combat IUU fishing across borders and promote sustainable fisheries abroad. The agencies plan to build upon each other’s respective programmes, strategies and investments. They aim to –
- Support developing countries as they strengthen their own assessment, monitoring and enforcement capabilities;
- Promote innovations in combating IUU fishing through alliances with other governments and the private sector; and
- Increase incentives for compliance and consequences for violating fisheries rules.
