US HAS SUSPENDED EXPORTS OF US-ORIGIN DEFENCE EQUIPMENT AND SENSITIVE TECHNOLOGY TO HONG KONG

A news release from the US State Department on 29 June advised that Chinese Communist Party’s decision to enforce changes has forced the Trump Administration to re-evaluate its policies toward the territory. The US says that it can no longer distinguish between the export of controlled items to Hong Kong or to mainland China. It says that it will take steps toward imposing the same restrictions on US defence and dual-use technologies to Hong Kong as it does for China. In addition, the US Commerce Department announced that it is suspending Hong Kong’s preferential trade treatment, and it is considering taking further action to eliminate differential treatment between China and Hong Kong.
