THAILAND: DRUG MONEY LAUNDERED THROUGH GOLD SHOPS AND USED TO BUY OIL – SO LARGE AS TO HAVE “ECONOMIC IMPLICATIONS”

An article in the Thai Examiner on 20 June, following the news of dozens of police raids and 300 arrests last week, said that networks involved used drugs money to buy gold which they then used to purchase oil and sold it on international markets. 100 people are still said to be on the run. It is claimed that the scale of the criminal money laundering unearthed is so vast that it may even have had economic implications, and that some of the directions concerning this vast undertaking were coming from inside the walls of Thai prisons.
