COVID-19 IS CHANGING THE ROUTE OF ILLICIT DRUG FLOWS, SAYS UN REPORT

A news release from the UN Office on Drugs and Crime on 7 May says that measures implemented by governments to curb the COVID-19 pandemic have led to drug trafficking routes by air being disrupted, along with drastic reduction or increased interdiction in trafficking routes over land. Some drug supply chains have been interrupted and traffickers are looking for alternative routes, including maritime routes, depending on the types of drugs smuggled.

ARE MOZAMBIQUE’S INSURGENTS CLOSING IN ON ILLICIT TRAFFICKING PROFITS?

On 8 May, the Daily Maverick posed this question in a detailed article, saying that insurgents in northern Mozambique may be positioning themselves to reap greater profits.  It says that illicit trade in the north of the country has capitalised on and fostered corruption at all levels of government.  There are drugs, human trafficking, high-value hardwood timber and gold and rubies that are, or can be, involved.  One intriguing element is the flow of “rough” rubies (uncut gems sold by artisanal miners), following the discovery of ruby deposits in 2009.
