HONG KONG CUSTOMS OFFICIALS ARREST 4 PERSONS FOR SELLING MASKS WITH DANGEROUS BACTERIAL COUNT

On 14 March, the South China Morning Post reported that Hong Kong’s customs officials have arrested 4 pharmacy directors for selling masks that exceeded the limit of bacterial count by up to about 12 times.  The face coverings could be particularly dangerous for the elderly and children and those with a weak immune system, authorities said.  2 brands came from Turkey and Nepal, while the source of 2 other brands were still under investigation.

COVID-19: EU INTRODUCES EXPORT CONTROLS ON PERSONAL PROTECTIVE EQUIPMENT (PPE)

On 16 March, the EU announced that the Commission had introduced a requirement for exports of personal protective equipment (PPE) outside Europe to take place only if authorised (licensed) by Member States.  The development, for an initial 6 weeks, aims to protect the availability of supplies of such equipment within the EU Single Market.  Some individual Member States had already introduced such restrictions.  EU Regulation 2020/402/EU has been enacted to implement the controls.
