UK GAMBLING OPERATORS FACING PUBLIC RELATIONS CRISIS OVER VIP CUSTOMER ACTIVITY

On 3 January, Calvin Ayre reported that the Guardian newspaper in the UK claims to have had access to a confidential Gambling Commission report regarding online licensees’ VIP gambling programmes.  The report is said to have analysed data from 9 unidentified betting operators who apparently offer both retail and online betting.  The Guardian is said to have focused on VIPs accounting for a disproportionate amount of gambling account deposits and VIPs being over represented in the ranks of the UK’s problem gamblers.  Of an estimated 47,000 VIP gamblers in the UK about 8% are suspected of being problem gamblers.  The article says that the Commissions is said to be considering several options including a complete ban on running VIP programmes.
