WORLD BANK DEBARS CHINESE CONSTRUCTION COMPANY FROM CONTRACTS

On 14th August, a post on the FCPA Blog reported that Beijing Jingold Construction Co., Ltd (BJC) is ineligible to participate in World Bank-financed projects during a 15-month debarment imposed for a “fraudulent practice” involving a project in Samoa.  The World Bank said that BJC had a history of contract non-performance at the time of bidding, but knowingly misrepresented this fact when it bid on a contract to provide airport infrastructure.  The $38 million World Bank funded project involved was designed to improve operational safety and oversight of international air transport and associated infrastructure in Samoa, and BJC did not win the contract.

FORMER VICE-PRESIDENT OF VENEZUELA AND A VENEZUELAN BUSINESSMAN ADDED TO US MOST WANTED LIST FOR INTERNATIONAL NARCOTICS TRAFFICKING AND MONEY LAUNDERING

A news release from US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) on 14th August advised that former vice president of Venezuela Tareck El Aissami and Venezuelan businessman Samark Lopez Bello had been added to ICE’s Most Wanted List for international narcotics trafficking, money laundering.  This followed an investigation that led to their special designations as narcotics traffickers as well as sanctions imposed by OFAC in 2017 and criminal charges filed in New York earlier this year.  The action is separate from those being taken against the Maduro regime in Venezuela.
