IRAN HAS HUNDREDS OF SEA MINES BUT US NAVY MINESWEEPERS ARE OLD AND FEW IN NUMBER

An article from Pro Publica on 5th August looked at the threat from Iranian mining activities and the resources the US Navy has to counter it.  It says that the Avenger-class ships were built in the late 1980s and early 1990s and slated for retirement years ago – but their retirement date has been continually delayed because the service still doesn’t have a working replacement, and the latest estimate is that the ships will all be decommissioned by fiscal year 2023.  It reports that a defence contractor who has worked with the ships in recent years said the minesweepers suffered the highest rate of mechanical problems of any USN ship.
