CHINA’S BAOSHANG BANK IS TAKEN OVER BY REGULATORS

On 24th May, PYMNTS.com reported that Baoshang Bank, based in Inner Mongolia, will be taken over for a year by China’s banking and insurance regulator over critical credit risks.

EGYPT UNFREEZES ASSETS OF MUBARAK-ERA INTERIOR MINISTER HABIB AL-ADLY

Arab News on 26th May reported that Egypt has unfrozen the assets of its Mubarak-era interior minister, who was acquitted on all corruption-related charges earlier this month.  In 2014, Adly was acquitted of charges of responsibility for the deaths of protesters during the 2011 uprising.

JERSEY STREETS PAVED WITH GOLD FOR DRUG CRIMINALS

On 26th May, an article on the Jersey Evening Post was concerned with the claim that dDRUG gangs from all of the UK’s major cities and across Europe still see Jersey as a major target for their criminal enterprises because of the sky-high prices drugs can fetch on the Island’s streets.  This was as 8 criminals, 4 of whom were born on Merseyside, were jailed for a combined total of more than half a century for their parts in conspiracies to bring almost £1 million worth of heroin and cannabis to Jersey.  Alan Smitton, a Liverpudlian career criminal, who was living in the Island, was jailed for 17 years for his role in both the drugs operations.

ALGERIAN PROSECUTOR REFERS 2 FORMER PRIME MINISTERS AND 8 OTHER MINISTERS TO SUPREME COURT OVER ALLEGED CORRUPTION

On 26th May, Reuters reported that an Algerian prosecutor has asked the supreme court to investigate 2 former prime ministers and 8 former ministers for alleged corruption, state TV reported.  Most of the 10 politicians named by the public prosecution served in the cabinet just before President Abdelaziz Bouteflika resigned on April 2nd.

ISRAEL: POLICE TO RECOMMEND CHARGES AGAINST ISRAEL’S RICHEST WOMAN

Officers say that Shari Arison and executives of her construction company – Shikun & Bunui – had a “culture of bribery” in payments made to African countries.  She sold her controlling interest in the business last year.  The report says that that the main investigation centred on Kenya.
