ARMS TRAFFICKING CASE IN US COURT SPOTLIGHTS HAITI’S ILLEGAL WEAPONS PROBLEM
The Miami Herald on 1st February reported that federal authorities accuse Orlando gun shop owners of conspiring with a Haiti senator and others to ship firearms and ammunition from the US to Haiti without a licence. The firearms were concealed in a white Mitsubishi Fuso commercial work truck that had been shipped from Palm Beach County. The case is said to spotlight the failure of the US arms embargo on Haiti since 1991 and the lack of political will in that country to suppress the illegal arms trade. Haiti is said to be awash in illegal weapons, with politicians long accused of funnelling arms to gangs while others are being protected by armed militias.
