GERMAN COMPANY PROBED OVER ALLEGED ILLEGAL SHIPMENT OF EUTHANASIA DRUG TO US

On 12th July, Deutsche Welle reported that a German medical company is suspected of illegally shipping several tons of a solution that is used to euthanise animals to the US.  The solution contains an ingredient also used to execute prisoners.  Pharmaceutical company VET Pharma Friesoythe GmbH is reportedly being investigated for shipping a liquid drug used for euthanising dogs to the US illegally.  “Beuthanasia-D,” contains pentobarbital, which is used in lethal injection cocktails.  3 shipments of “Beuthanasia-D” were allegedly sent to the US without a proper export licence between November 2017 and January 2018, with another 2 shipments that may have also been sent to Japan, once again lacking the required export licences.  Exporting pentobarbital to the US is only permitted when the destination of the substance and its intended use is made clear – because of the risk of it being used in executions by US states, and in the past 5 years no exports of pentobarbital to the US have been approved by Germany.  The trade of pentobarbital has been highly regulated and restricted within the EU since 2011 due to its use in executions.
